7:59am | California State University trustees approved Tuesday a 12 percent tuition hike, effectively doubling the amount students were charged four years ago.
The fee hike is effective beginning this fall. It is the second tuition increase the CSU has made this year.
Last fall, tuition was $4,44o. This fall it will jump to $5,472.
CSU’s financial officer, Ben Quillian, told trustees they had no choice other than to raise fees because the new state budget trims the CSU system’s funding by $650 million — $150 million more than expected.
The 13-2 vote was made as roughly 100 students and faculty protested. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and student trustee Steve Dixon cast the dissenting votes.
