UPDATE | A city employee died Monday from injuries he sustained when a trailer he was working on crushed him Thursday morning, Long Beach city officials announced today. The accident is being investigated by the City of Long Beach and the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration. 

Stevaughn Matthews, 28, was a garage services attendant assigned to the Department of Financial Management Fleet Services Bureau and had been working for the city since February. 

Officials said Matthews was working on a trailer at the Fleet Services Building, located at 2600 Temple Avenue, when the trailer fell on him on Thursday, September 1. He was transported in critical condition to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. 

“Mr. Matthews was very well liked, and his presence will be greatly missed by his coworkers at the Fleet Services Bureau,” stated city public affairs officer Kerry Gerot in an email. “City Officials have expressed their deepest condolences to his family.” 

Friends and family also took to social media to reflect on Matthews’ life and death.

The city has sent counselors to employees at the work-site to provide support and assistance. 

The city’s Safety Office, in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office, will continue to investigate the accident along with Cal/OSHA, Gerot stated.

9/1/16 at 11:33AM | A city employee was transported to a local trauma hospital in critical condition after a large trailer fell on him this morning, Long Beach fire officials said.

Authorities responded to the City of Long Beach City Fleets Services building, located at 2600 Temple Avenue, just after 9:00AM on Thursday, September 1, according to Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) spokesman Brian Fisk.

Fisk said a “large trailer” fell on the employee, but did not go into details as to how the incident happened. The employee, who was in traumatic full arrest, was transported to a local trauma hospital in critical condition.

No other information is available at this time.
