While many traditional youth actives have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, kids will still have plenty to do this summer with the city’s new “Recreation Reimagined” program.

Kicking off July 6 and continuing through Aug. 28, Long Beach will offer modified summer camp programs at 22 parks across the city for children ages 5 through 12. Programs for teenagers will be offered at 4 different parks featuring educational enrichment and fitness activities.

The programs will incorporate health safety protocols, social distancing and strict guidelines that will limit the number of participants. All camp participants will be given lunch during the camp program, and non-camp participants will be offered to-go lunches.

The cost is $30 per week per participant, down from the previous $115 per week. No field trips will be offered this summer.

Locations include: Admiral Kidd Park, Bayshore Park, Bixby Park, Cesar Chavez Park, Colorado Lagoon (Model Boat Shop), Coolidge Park, Drake Park, El Dorado Park West, Houghton Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, McBride Park, Orizaba Park, Pan Am Park, Ramona Park, Seaside Park, Scherer Park, Silverado Park, Somerset Park, Stearns Park, Veterans Park, Wardlow Park and Whaley Park.

Visit the city’s Parks and Recreation site for more information.

In addition to the parks programs, the city will allow the Junior Lifeguards program to move forward with modifications for health orders. The Junior Lifeguard program will run two sessions a day, from July 6 through August 14.

Other summer activities, such as the summer concert series, movies in the park and outdoor festivals remained canceled for this year.

The city, however, is working to possibly restore other actives in the next phase of reopening, including swimming pools, El Dorado Nature Center Museum Classes, youth and adult sports programs and community centers.
