The City of Long Beach’s Office of the City Auditor has been operating effectively for the third consecutive year, according to a recent independent peer review by the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA), which reviewed the office from 2012 to 2014.

Members of the ALGA reviewed the office’s internal quality control system, including policies and procedures, documents related to independence, training, and development of auditing staff, as well as internal monitoring procedures.

“Based on the results of our review, it is our opinion that the City of Long Beach Office of the City Auditor’s internal quality control system was suitably designed and operating effectively to provide reasonable assurance of compliance with Government Auditing Standards for audits and attestation engagements,” peer reviewers reported.

The auditors hailed from different parts of the country, including VIrginia, Florida and Oregon.

“I am honored to work with a staff dedicated to upholding the highest professional standards,” said City Auditor Laura Doud.

This is the third consecutive peer review conducted that found the office’s internal operations met national standards, according to a press release from the city auditor’s office.

Audit organizations following these standards require a peer review every three years to ensure work is adhering to established policies and procedures, the release goes on to say.

“This distinction assures the public that the office provides fair reviews of city operations and spending during a time when it is critical that taxpayer dollars are monitored for appropriate and honest use,” according to the office.
