Bicyclists and inline skaters do not need to worry about sharing a path at the beach with pedestrians anymore. The city announced today it is working to contruct a new, separate beach path just for pedestrians.
The current bike path is shared by everyone, including pedestrians, pedestrians pushing strollers, bicyclists, roller skaters and inline skaters.
The new $6.4M pedestrian-only path is being financed through Tidelands Operations Funds. It will stretch 3.1 miles along the coast from the Downtown Shoreline Marina to 54th Place, and will be 11 feet wide. Additionally, it will be constructed with an environmentally-friendly resin-based surface, which is less rigid than concrete and more desirable for walking and running.
“The new pedestrian path will encourage greater use of our beach, promote more active and healthy lifestyles, and improve mobility and travel options,” said Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal in a statement.
New pedestrian and bike ramps will also be constructed at the Belmont Pier. Additionally, new turf will be installed between the Junipero parking lot and Bixby Park as part of the project.
To allow for construction, impacted segments on the beach will be temporarily closed, with the first major area of construction being between Granada and 54th Place. This area will be closed beginning this week.
“This strategic investment in our coastline will increase beach access and coastal recreation, as well as safety for pedestrians and cyclists, by creating a dedicated pedestrian path,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “I’m proud of the thoughtful and responsible stewardship of coastal resources in Long Beach.”
Officials expect the project to be completed by May 31, 2015.
