Alamitos Beach has recently become more ADA-accessible, thanks to approximately $1.8 million in funding from the Tidelands Operating Budget, and the city is looking to share its new qualities with Long Beach residents.
On Saturday, June 4 at 11:00AM, city personnel will host a free celebration honoring the improvements, which began in January 2016, followed by a meet and greet with architectural team leading the planning and design process for the Alamitos Beach Concession Facility Rebuild.
“The enhancements on Shoreline Drive and at Alamitos Beach Parking Lot will improve our infrastructure for years to come, and will be especially helpful during the busy summer season,” said Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal in a statement.
The culmination of the project marks a number of improvements to the area, including new asphalt, a new ADA-compliant sidewalk, landscaping and irrigation reconstruction, signing and striping for a north and south bike lane and a new signalized entrance to the Alamitos Beach Parking Lot.
Other exciting new details related to the property include bio-retention areas to assist with water retention in the parking lot, as well as natural filtration treatment of runoff. In addition, drought tolerant landscaping and irrigation were installed in the island planters, according to the city.
Beyond that, new parking meters and multi-space pay stations are set to allow multiple forms of payment, as well as new LED lights and two new light poled to enhance lighting coverage.
Funding for the improvements came from the Tidelands Operations Fund, which is solely dedicated to “operations, programs, maintenance and development of the marinas, beaches and waterways, the Convention Center the Queen Mary and adjacent properties, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Rainbow Harbor Area.” Other purposes for the funds include marina management, police, fire and lifeguards, beach and marina maintenance, lease management, parking operations and other support functions.
