With the opening of the much-anticipated downtown eatery BO-Beau just around the corner, Councilmember and State Assembly hopeful Suja Lowenthal is hoping to allow the restaurant’s proposed “rooftap” to provide live entertainment.

“By allowing rooftop entertainment at Bo-Beau, we’re broadening the experiences offered in the dining and entertainment district without sacrificing quality of life for residents,” Lowenthal told the Post. “In doing so, we’re giving city staff and the newly formed DDED task force a test case by which to base their recommendations for future rooftop patio dining and entertainment permits.”

The ordinance, being proposed at this week’s City Council meeting, would help the restaurant at 144 Pine keep its entertainment from being restricted to indoor-use only. Much to the criticism of many business leaders—including BO-Beau owner David Cohn himself—businesses within the Downtown Dining and Entertainment District (DDED) are limited in how and when they can entertain, mostly due to complaints from residents regarding noise from past establishments like Cohiba.

BOBeau01Following proof that the Cohn Restaurant Group, BO-Beau’s owner, had constructed their rooftop patio to capture sound and limit the kind of excessive noise that residents had complained about with previous tenants, Lowenthal felt it appropriate to allow Bo-Beau to have entertainment on their rooftop.

“Given the improvements made to the rooftop to capture sound [and] the intended use of entertainment as a complement to the primary function of dining at BO-Beau,” Lowenthal said in her proposal, “I committed to returning in the new year with an amendment to the existing DDED ordinance to allow entertainment on this rooftop until such time as the Downtown Dining and Entertainment District Task Force returned with recommendations related to entertainment on this and future rooftops in the DDED.”

If approved, BO-Beau will be permitted to to entertain on its roof Monday through Wednesday until 12AM, Thursday through Saturday until 1AM, and on Sunday nights until 10PM.
