The City of Long Beach will do its part to reduce its carbon footprint this month as one of 10 California cities participating in the CoolCalifornia City Challenge.

Since its introduction in January, the contest has encouraged participants to log monthly driving, electricity and/or gas bills to earn “points,” which will raise money to help support Energy Upgrade California.

Residents can still sign up for the challenge until Sept. 29 to support a participating non-profit or school, said city spokesman Larry Rich in a statement.

Schools and non-profits can compete as a team for prize money, but need a minimum of 100,000 combined points to qualify for the following prizes: $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place. Prizes will be awarded through the Long Beach Community Foundation.

Other California cities participating in the challenge include Arcata, Corona, Lynwood, Riverside, Burlingame, Chula Vista, Mission Viejo, Claremont and Rancho Cucamonga.

“I’m very proud that Long Beach is competing to be the Coolest City in California,” said Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “Our community takes sustainability seriously, and we are committed to reduce our carbon footprint in many ways, including through this challenge.”
