Recruits from Long Beach Police Academy class #87 pick up trash on the beach.
The recruits of Long Beach Police Academy #87 showed their support for the city and the environment Saturday as they did their part to clean up the beach.
Traditionally, each recruit class organizes a volunteer community service project that they do on their own time and day off, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) said in a statement.
The recruits of Class 87, dressed in civilian clothes—shorts, black academy class t-shirts and tennis shoes—met at about 9AM in the Junipero lot off Ocean Boulevard and Junipero Avenue. They were met by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, who provided rubber gloves and trash bags for the project.
The recruits collected trash along the shoreline, where debris tends to accumulate, and east of the Belmont Pier.
As one recruit had his infant son strapped to his back in an infant carrier while cleaning up trash, he inspired other community members to jump in and help.
Upon completion of the 27-week program, which began in the summer and ends this Thursday, the recruits will be on a probation period during a year-long training program.
