After colliding with a Metro Blue Line train last Friday in Long Beach, 89-year-old Signal Hill resident Robert Lee Mills was pronounced dead this morning. It marks the second Blue Line-related death this month, following the death of 46-year-old Melvin Foster, Jr. on September 8.

According to reports from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), on September 12, Mills was stopped in the left turn lane of Long Beach Blvd. at Burnett St. while inside his Cadillac STS. When the light indicated southbound Long Beach Blvd. traffic, including the train, was permitted to go forth, Mills turned left into the intersection and collided with the train. The train pushed the broadsided vehicle 50 feet before coming to a complete stop.

When officers arrived at 9:28PM, the Long Beach Fire Department was contacted in order to extricate Mills from his vehicle and transport him to a nearby hospital.

There were no other injuries reported by the train operator or any train passengers. The train operator was questioned and released and it does not appear any charges will be filed, according to the LBPD.
