A final community workshop will be held tonight to discuss ideas for the creation of a Long Beach Historic Preservation Element (HPE) that would serve to identify and protect significant historic sites and structures, protecting important buildings that do not carry the designation of “historic landmark.”

The meeting will be held at First Congregational Church’s Peterson Hall, 241 Cedar Ave, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  The meeting is wheelchair accessible, and light refreshments will be provided.  Call (562) 570-6864 for more information.

According to a press release provided by the Advocacy Committee of Long Beach Heritage, an HPE will become more valuable and the city changes and redevelops in that the organization will work with the City to ensure that older, historic buildings are incorporated into future plans and not ignored or destroyed because of them.

An optional addition to the City’s 2030 General Plan, the HPE will be greatly involved with setting policy direction and preservation.  Considering a heartbreaking recent announcement from one of the city’s most famous landmarks, one wonders whether things might have been different with more attention to historical structures.
