The City Council voted last night to oppose Proposition 8, which would rewrite the California constitution to deny same-sex marriage and void the many marriages already performed statewide since the state Supreme Court overturned Proposition 22 in June – effectively legalizing same-sex marriage throughout the state.

The Council voted 6-0 on the issue, with members Andrews, O’Donnell and Reyes-Uranga absent.

The vote was put before the Council by Councilmembers Gerrie Schipske, Tonia Reyes-Uranga and Bonnie Lowenthal, recommending that Proposition 8 be opposed when it comes to a vote in November.

“In a free society, two people in a committed, trusting and loving relationship expect the freedom to marry and the honor and support that come with marriage,” their proposal stated.  “We should not support any attempt to make their marriage illegal.”
