Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews pulled his proposed agenda item that would have asked the city attorney to prepare a draft ordinance for council consideration that would allow “Long Beach economic refugees” or homeless people to sleep in their cars in designated areas throughout the City.
Councilman Andrews released the following statement: “This issue requires much consideration from our City Councilmembers and due to the time needed for the Budget, this will not allow Council the proper amount of time to deliberate on this important issue,” said Councilman Andrews. “I will be bringing this item back to Council after the 2010 Budget is passed,” continued Councilman Andrews.
Under Andrews’ proposal, the zones would have included municipal properties, church parking lots and other areas that would be zoned with the goal of having minimal impact on residential homes and communities, according to the release.
Similar ordinances have been adopted in Santa Barbara County and Eugene, Oregon.
