7:45pm | Second District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal will seek to retain her seat on the Long Beach City Council next spring, according to paperwork she filed with the City Clerk’s Office on Wednesday.

Lowenthal, who currently serves as vice mayor on the Council, was first elected to represent the city’s Second District back in 2006, when a special election was held to fill the seat vacated by former Councilman Dan Baker, who stepped down after it was discovered that he had made real estate investments with the head of the local police officers association. Two years later, she was re-elected to her current four-year term.

Prior to becoming a councilwoman, she served as a school board member for Long Beach Unified School District, a post to which she was first elected in 2001.

She has a bachelor’s degree in economics from UCLA, a master’s in business administration from Cal State Los Angeles and a doctorate in policy, planning and development from USC.

She is an adjunct professor at Cal State Long Beach, teaching an upper division class on public policy.

The Second District includes Bluff Heights, the Broadway business corridor, Carroll Park and Rose Park.
