Police have arrested and charged the man they believe is responsible for the murder of 23-year-old Jesus Escapite, Jr. who was shot Monday afternoon on a side street just off Long Beach Blvd. in the Virginia Village area of North Long Beach.

25-year-old Long Beach resident Gustavo Alejandre was arrested by North Division Directed Enforcement Officers shortly after the murder on an unrelated charge and was charged with Escapite’s murder Tuesday night. According to police, the investigation led detectives to believe a blue four-door vehicle was possibly involved in the shooting and homicide detectives worked with North Division patrol officers to identify Alejandre as a suspect.

The shooting occurred at around 3PM Monday on Plymouth St. just west of Long Beach Blvd. and just south of Market St. When officers arrived, Escapite was found shot in the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The incident was investigated as gang related.

Alejandre remains in custody at Long Beach City Jail. The L.A. District Attorney will determine what exact charges will be filed.
