Detectives arrested a man today who allegedly stabbed a fellow homeless man to death during a fight over vandalism in Long Beach.

James Mays, 53, was booked on suspicion of murder in connection with the Sept. 7 killing of 41-year-old Anthony Durr at a homeless encampment, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Firefighters requested officers at 5:35 a.m. on that date at a residence in the 200 block of East Artesia Boulevard, where Durr, who had been stabbed multiple times in his upper body, was found on the ground outside the home, according to police. Durr was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Based on their investigation, detectives believe Mays and Durr were known to each other,” according to a police statement. “Mays confronted Durr about a vandalism which had just occurred. During the confrontation Mays attacked Durr with an edged weapon which resulted in Durr’s death.”

Mays was being held in lieu of $2 million bail and investigators anticipate presenting their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office next week for the possible filing of criminal charges, police said.

Police had earlier said evidence located during the preliminary investigation led detectives to a homeless encampment on the east side of Long Beach Boulevard near the 91 Freeway, where they spotted evidence of a crime scene, police said.

Detectives believe Durr was walking in the homeless encampment when the confrontation and stabbing occurred. Durr managed to walk a short distance before he collapsed and died, police said. Mays fled the scene on foot and was not immediately located.
