Authorities today identified a homeless man struck by multiple vehicles and killed as he tried to cross the eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway in Bellflower.

James Thompson, 28, died at the scene of his injuries, which happened Monday around 9:30 p.m. near Lakewood Boulevard, according to the coroner’s office and the California Highway Patrol.

Thompson was walking along the shoulder of the freeway before he tried to cross and a car hit him in the No. 1 lane, authorities said. He ended up in the carpool lane where at least two other cars struck him, according to the CHP.

One of the cars that hit him fled the scene, authorities said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was urged to call the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs area office at 562-868-0503.
