8/14/17 at 12:28PM | A 51-year-old Los Angeles bicyclist was killed in North Long Beach early Monday when he attempted to stop a motorist who struck and injured a fellow rider, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Authorities said the driver of a 2000 Ford Expedition was originally involved in an accident that injured the fellow bicyclist at Long Beach Boulevard and the westbound 91 freeway offramp.

The driver then took off southbound on Long Beach Boulevard when the 51-year-old bicyclist jumped on the driver’s side of the vehicle to prevent him from fleeing. The bicyclist attempted to reach through the driver’s side window and turn off the car’s ignition, according to a release from LBPD.

“The driver then made a turn at a high rate of speed at Bort Boulevard, where the witness/victim fell off the vehicle and struck his head on the curb,” officials stated. “The driver then parked his vehicle in the middle of the service road on Long Beach Boulevard and West Adams Street and fled the scene on foot.”

Officers who were dispatched to the second incident at 1:17AM found the victim lying on the southwest corner of Long Beach Boulevard and Bort Street and the abandoned SUV a block away.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of kin. The surviving bicyclist was treated at the scene and released.
