Police say a bicyclist died after he was struck by a semi-truck’s trailer as it turned out of a parking lot in West Long Beach.
The crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. on Sept. 4 on Pacific Coast Highway near Canal Avenue, according to Long Beach police.
The bicyclist was heading westbound on the south sidewalk when a semi-truck made a right turn out of a parking lot, police said. The bicyclist tried to stop short, but the trailer struck him and knocked him to the ground.
The bicyclist was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police said they weren’t notified of his death until Sept. 10.
Police identified him as a 68-year-old man from Long Beach, but withheld his name pending family notification.
The semi-truck driver kept driving eastbound on PCH, police said. A detailed description of the semi was not immediately available.
Long Beach has recorded 35 fatal crashes this year. Last year, it saw 53 fatal crashes — the highest total in more than a decade.
