Police say they arrested a Los Angeles man Wednesday following a five-hour standoff in Bixby Knolls, where he refused to drop a dagger despite being shot with non-lethal foam bullets and a Taser.

Officers responded just before 4:30 p.m. to the 4500 block of Atlantic Avenue after being notified about a man holding a knife, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 44-year-old Patrick Dean Parks holding a dagger, police said.

An officer from the city’s Mental Evaluation Team attempted to de-escalate the situation, police said, but Parks refused to put the weapon down.

After several hours of trying to get him to cooperate, officers blocked off the area and called in the department’s SWAT team.

When he still refused to comply with police commands, they shot him with a 40 mm less-lethal round and then Tased him, but to no avail, police said.

Five hours later, Parks was taken into custody with the help of a K9 unit, police said.

He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries before being medically cleared and booked on suspicion of carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, brandishing a weapon, and resisting arrest, police said, adding that his bail is pending review by a magistrate.

The investigation is ongoing.
