A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a 2020 shooting in Long Beach’s Washington neighborhood that left a 23-year-old man dead, police said.
Long Beach resident Armando Hernandez was taken into custody Thursday morning by SWAT officers on suspicion of murder, according to the Long Beach Police Department. His bail was set at $3 million, police said.
Police say Hernandez was one of two people who approached 23-year-old Long Beach resident Jose Rodriguez on the afternoon of June 24, 2020. Hernandez and another person began shooting at Rodriguez, striking him in the upper and lower torso, the Long Beach Police Department said.
Rodriguez died at the hospital two days later, according to authorities.
A motive for the shooting remains under investigation, but police said it appears to be gang-related. It was unclear whether police had located another suspect in the shooting.
Eventually, Hernandez was identified as a suspect in the shooting, and officers were granted permission to serve a warrant at a residence in the 200 block of West 14th Street associated with Hernandez, according to authorities.
Special Investigation Division and SWAT team officers arrived at the residence around 4 a.m. Thursday and ordered Hernandez outside, police said, adding that he surrendered himself to SWAT officers without incident.
During a search of Hernandez’s home, detectives recovered several items of evidence, police said.
Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office next week for filing consideration, police said.
