A 41-year-old man was killed and a second man was detained for questioning, but few further details were available about a shooting Monday in Compton.

The incident began around 11:35 a.m. with a report of a gunshot victim in the 1200 block of Castlegate Avenue, which is a few blocks from Long Beach’s northern border, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies found the victim suffering from one gunshot wound to his upper body. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

As of late Monday afternoon, there was no word on whether the detained man had been arrested.

A motive for the shooting remained unknown, according to the sheriff’s department.
