A pedestrian was hospitalized in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle near Signal Hill Friday morning, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police say the pedestrian was in the roadway sometime around 5 a.m. when he was hit.

Authorities arrived at the scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital where he is currently in critical, but stable condition, according to the LBPD.

The driver of the vehicle, meanwhile, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. Police did not say whether speed, distracted or impaired driving are being investigated as factors in the crash.

The crash initially shut down a stretch of Redondo Avenue near Signal Hill during the investigation. Lanes reopened around 7:20 a.m.
