A man who stole a bike from a Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) student and evaded police earlier this year was sentenced last week, CSULB police said Friday.

The theft of the bicycle was reported to CSULB police on the evening of February 11 earlier this year, according to a statement from police. The victim filed a stolen bicycle report, stating the bike was parked and secured outside the Student Recreation and Wellness Center near the tennis courts before being stolen.

University police checked the campus perimeter and located a suspect riding a bicycle matching the description of the victim’s bike. Officers followed the suspect onto Atherton St. and attempted to detain him using red lights and sirens. The suspect fled on the bicycle into Whaley Park, police said, and dumped the bike on the southwest corner of the park, continuing to flee on foot.

The suspect, later identified as Anthony Webster, was apprehended by CSULB police, arrested and put in jail. He was charged with theft, evading police and causing injuries to officers during the chase and arrest.

Webster was convicted last Tuesday and sentenced to 180 days in county jail, provide Cal Trans service and hold three years under formal probation. If he violates his probation, police said, he will be given a four-year prison sentence. He was also ordered by the court to stay away from CSULB.
