The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has declined to file charges against a man accused of shooting another man in Central Long Beach on July 1, saying he acted in self defense, authorities said Wednesday.

Police say Bryant U. shot and killed 25-year-old Ruben Lopez and wounded a 17-year-old boy who was passing by when he got into an argument with Lopez near 12th Street and MLK Jr. Avenue. Authorities are only identifying him as Bryant U. to protect his safety and privacy, police said in a news release.

Detectives believe Bryant and two other men were confronted by Lopez and his relative at about 8:40 p.m. on July 1.

“Lopez initiated a physical altercation with a member of the group, then turned toward Bryant. Bryant then discharged his firearm and struck Lopez, resulting in his death,” police said.

Police arrested Bryant on Aug. 13 on suspicion of murder and he was held on a $2 million bail. Two days later, detectives presented their case to the DA’s office for filing consideration.

“While evidence concluded that Bryant was responsible for the shooting death of Lopez, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office determined that Bryant acted in self-defense,” police said.

Police have released Bryant from custody.
