A man died Monday afternoon after a daytime shooting took place just off Long Beach Blvd. in the Virginia Village area. 

According to police, the shooting occurred around 3PM in the area of West Plymouth St. and Long Beach Blvd., just below Market St. Upon arrival, officers found a male adult who had been shot in the upper torso. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Witnesses said a man was detained at the scene following the shooting, but was released. No suspect information at this time.

Police presence remained at the intersection and at the restaurant on the corner through the early evening. The investigation is ongoing.

Residents said that a neighborhood watch was just started for the neighborhood west of Long Beach Blvd. where the shooting took place. It went into effect on September 17.
