A 68-year-old man from Long Beach died Wednesday, a week after he was hit by a car, and police are still looking for the driver who hit him, officials said.

Officers were first called to the area of 12th Street and Long Beach Boulevard, near St. Mary Medical Center, at about 2:25 a.m. on Dec. 15, police said. They found a man who had been hit by a car while  walking. Paramedics took him to a local hospital in critical condition.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a 2012 Nissan Altima was traveling southbound on Long Beach Boulevard when they lost control of their vehicle at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and Anaheim Street, striking the pedestrian, a tree and a parked vehicle,” police said.

The driver fled before officers arrived, leaving the Altima unoccupied nearby. It’s unclear if the vehicle is connected to the suspect.

Hospital officials notified detectives today that the victim died of his injuries. He is only being identified as a 68-year-old resident of Long Beach until his next of kin is notified.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this collision, to contact Detective Kevin Matter at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
