A man is in critical condition after shooting himself during an argument with his son in a North Long Beach home Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
At around 4 p.m., police said, officers arrived at a home on 70th Way between Myrtle Avenue and Orange Avenue after receiving a call about an armed man. Upon arrival, officers heard shots coming from inside and saw a victim fleeing on foot from the home.
The victim told police that he got into an argument with his father while inside of his residence. The father then brandished a firearm, fired at his son and then shot himself, according to Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Brandon Fahey. Because the investigation is ongoing, it is unclear if the father shot himself accidentally, police said.
Police identified the father as 68-year-old Bobby Bernard of Long Beach. Police said they arrested him on suspicion of assault with a firearm on a person.
The Long Beach Fire Department transported Bernard to a local hospital where he is currently receiving care under police supervision, Fahey said.
Police urged anyone who has information regarding the incident to contact investigators at 562-570-7370. Anonymous tips may be submitted at lacrimestoppers.org
