A fight near Browning High School prompted a 50-minute lockdown at the campus after callers mistakenly told police the conflict involved a gun Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Parents and students say the fight was on-campus in the quad area, but police say the incident was off-campus.

Police sent officers to the school after getting reports of fighting, gang activity and a firearm, but the situation ended up being an off-campus fight between students that “escalated when their parents became involved,” police officer Ben Hearst said in an email.

Police went to the campus around 12:30 p.m. after learning of the lockdown and an “unknown trouble” call, Hearst said.

“We received several second-party reports that there was fighting, gang activity and possibly a firearm involved,” Hearst said.

Officers at the scene found that there were no weapons or shots fired. The fight involving students and parents was off campus and everyone dispersed before police came, Hearst said.

The lockdown was precautionary and ended at 1:10 p.m., Long Beach Unified School District spokesman Chris Eftychiou said in an email.

“The situation appears to have stemmed from family members of a Browning student who became involved in an argument on campus,” Eftychiou said.
