A 46-year-old Riverside County man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and obstructing officers after he allegedly expressed a desire to shoot people, prompting an hours-long police standoff at a Long Beach hotel, according to authorities.
Menefee resident Maverick Campbell was arrested around 7:19 p.m. Tuesday night, hours after personnel from the Long Beach Police Department’s Mental Evaluation Team (MET) were unable to convince him to come out of a room at the Golden Sails Hotel in the 6200 block of East Pacific Coast Highway, according to the LBPD.
Police responded to the Golden Sails Hotel around 12:36 p.m. to check on Campbell’s well-being after reports that he had a gun and wanted to shoot people, LBPD Lt. Curtis Yee said. When the LBPD’s MET team arrived, they attempted to talk with Campbell and coax him out of his room but he refused, authorities said.
The LBPD deployed a SWAT team and established a perimeter around the area. Nearby residents were evacuated while others were told to stay sheltered in place as officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, the LBPD said.
After nearly five hours, Campbell exited the room and surrendered to officers, the LBPD said. No gun was found inside his room, police said.
The MET team determined Campbell did not meet the criteria for a 72-hour mental health hold, and he was subsequently arrested and booked by the LBPD. He was held on zero bail and released on his own recognizance today at around 7 a.m., police said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
