Long Beach police chased a suspected gunman through Scherer Park early this morning after officers at the nearby North Division police station heard a gunshot in the park, according to authorities.

The station is right next to Scherer Park at the corner of Del Amo Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue. Officers at the station heard the shot around 4:05 a.m. and “immediately responded,” LBPD spokesman Brandon Fahey said.

Officers spotted the gunman and ran after him through the park, but he managed to escape, according to Fahey.

Soon after, other officers found a man who’d been shot in the park, according to the department. He’d been wounded in the upper body, but the injury didn’t appear to be life-threatening, Fahey said.

Officers gave him first-aid until paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital, according to the LBPD.

Police don’t know yet what sparked the shooting, and they weren’t able to get much more information from the victim because of his injuries, Fahey said.

Officers still haven’t been able to find the gunman, according to the department. They did, however, find the gun abandoned in the park.

Detectives are still investigating and asked anyone with information to call 562-570-7370 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
