Students were sent running and police responded to Jordan High School Friday afternoon after a fight among students ended with an unfounded rumor that someone had a gun on campus.

Reports of a possible shooting spread quickly across social media, and one video on Instagram showed students running through the campus, apparently fleeing from something. Police also headed to campuses after getting a call around 1 p.m that someone might have a gun, but officers discovered that wasn’t true.

“Officers responded to the school and determined the call to be unfounded,” LBPD spokeswoman Allison Gallagher said.

Long Beach Unified spokesman Chris Eftychiou confirmed there was a fight between students on campus during lunchtime but that there was no shooting or weapon on the campus. Additional law enforcement and school safety officers were placed on campus as a precaution, Eftychiou said.

“No injuries occurred,” Eftychiou said. “We detained several students who were involved, and they will face appropriate disciplinary consequences even as we further investigate the altercation. Our school is a place of learning and excellence, and we will not tolerate this kind of behavior. Please know that the safety and wellbeing of our students remain of the utmost importance.”
