A killer could spend the rest of his life behind bars for gunning down a driver and wounding his passenger after they got into a fender-bender at a fast-food drive-thru in Long Beach.

A judge on Monday sentenced 28-year-old Joseph Jeremy Bronson to 72 years to life in prison after he was convicted in June of murder and attempted murder, according to court records.

Prosecutors said Bronson killed 22-year-old Long Beach resident Trevor McCrainey and seriously wounded his girlfriend, who was in the car with him, in a bout of road rage on March 7, 2017.

The confrontation was sparked when Bronson and McCrainey’s cars lightly struck each other at the Louis Burgers restaurant at Atlantic Avenue and Sixth Street, Deputy District Attorney Karen Brako previously said.

After a chase that led to an alley about four blocks to the south, Bronson opened fire on McCrainey and his girlfriend, authorities said. Bronson was arrested about a month later.

Bronson’s attorney argued during the trial that McCrainey was the aggressor in the chase and Bronson fired a weapon in self-defense, but prosecutors insisted Bronson was the one who escalated the situation.
