Long Beach police said today that an officer shot at an aggressive dog to prevent it from biting him while he was walking near the Los Angeles River on Tuesday.

Neither the officer nor the dog was hurt during the incident, which happened at about 5:10 p.m. near where the 405 Freeway crosses the river.

Police said the officer was there for an unspecified investigation when he “encountered an aggressive dog that attempted to bite him.” In response, the officer shot toward the dog “to prevent the attack.”

The dog was not hit, and it did not bite the officer, police said. Animal Control responded, but it was not immediately clear if they were able to capture the dog.

This comes days after a woman was seriously hurt when a pair of dogs attacked her on the L.A. River walking path near Anaheim Street. In that case, on Sunday afternoon, officers hit one of the dogs with batons and Tasered it to force it off the woman.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated.
