It was a deadly weekend on Long Beach’s roads.
Police said three people were killed and several more were injured in a string of three separate wrecks, including a speeding Tesla driver crashing through a cinderblock wall and a suspected drunk driver slamming into another car.
There have been 30 total fatal crashes in Long Beach this year — nearly twice the number of murders so far.
Alamitos and 10th
The first crash happened at about 8:21 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of Alamitos Avenue and 10th Street, according to Long Beach police.
Police said a Toyota pickup was making a left turn from 10th Street to northbound Alamitos Avenue when it hit a woman who was walking west in the north crosswalk of 10th Street.
She was taken to a hospital, where she later died, police said. Her name and age were withheld pending family notification.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Speed and impaired driving were not believed to be factors in the crash, police said.
6900 Atlantic Avenue
On Saturday, a suspected drunk driver was arrested after a high-speed crash in North Long Beach left one woman dead and a man injured.
The crash happened at about 2:40 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue just north of the 91 Freeway, police said.
Police said the driver was speeding northbound on Atlantic Avenue in a 2019 Volvo when he collided with a 2004 Chevrolet that was turning onto Atlantic Place from Atlantic Avenue.
The impact caused the Chevrolet to overturn and sent the Volvo careening into the intersection, where it struck two stationary cars.
A woman in the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man driving the car was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition, police said. The woman’s name and age were not immediately available.
Police said the Volvo driver initially fled the scene, then returned a short time later and was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing bodily injury.
The Volvo driver was identified as 38-year-old Adalberto Delgado-Perez, of Compton, police said. Delgado-Perez was being held on $100,000 bail.
5700 Pacific Coast Highway
Police say a two-car crash outside the Bixby Village Plaza killed a man Saturday night and injured two women.
It happened at about 10:35 p.m. on Pacific Coast Highway near North Bellflower Avenue, police said.
Police said a man was driving a 2026 Tesla westbound on Pacific Coast Highway at high speed when he struck a 2025 Volkswagen sedan that was exiting the shopping center.
The crash caused the Tesla to jump the curb and strike a cinderblock wall, knocking over the wall and damaging several parked vehicles, police said.
The Tesla driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died. His name and age were withheld pending family notification.
A 48-year-old woman and a 43-year-old woman in the Volkswagen were both taken to hospitals for treatment. One was transported in critical but stable condition, and the other was in stable condition.
Speed and impaired driving appeared to be factors in the crash, police said.
The bigger picture
Long Beach has been struggling to drive down the number of deadly crashes in recent years.
In 2025, it recorded its most fatal wrecks in more than a decade despite setting a goal to eliminate them completely by 2026.
In response to residents’ complaints about increasingly dangerous roads, the city is seeking to speed up safety improvements.
It’s hoping to further streamline the process by reorganizing parts of its Public Works Department to more efficiently spend $5 million a year that it expects to bring in from new speed cameras. By state law, that money must go right back into improving local streets.
