A man was cleaning his gun at a home in South Wrigley on Tuesday when the weapon accidentally went off, hitting him in the upper body, authorities said.

Police were called to the home on the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital in stable condition, police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

Police are still investigating, De Prez said, because even with an accidental discharge, they still need to find out if the gun was legally owned or if there was any criminal negligence involved.
