Police arrested a Long Beach man on suspicion of killing his girlfriend Monday night at their home in Lakewood Village, officials said.

Police were initially called to a home in the 4600 block of Whitewood Avenue at 8:30 p.m. about a woman who possibly killed herself, they said. When officers got there, dispatch updated them that a murder may have happened in the back unit of the house.

Officers encountered a man in front of the back house who immediately surrendered to them, police said. Colin Wolters, a 36-year-old resident of Long Beach, was taken into custody without incident, according to the LBPD.

Officers went into the back house and found a woman on the ground unresponsive and not breathing, police said. Paramedics arrived and determined she was dead.

Authorities identified her as 27-year-old Chelsea Smith from Long Beach.

“Through their investigation, detectives determined that the male suspect and female victim were in a dating relationship and lived together in the back residence,” police said. “There was an altercation between the couple that resulted in injuries to the victim’s upper torso.”

Wolters is being held in the Long Beach City Jail on $2 million bail. Detectives anticipate presenting their case against him to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later this week.
