A man facing a murder charge in the April death of his wife is also being charged with driving under the influence in a Nov. 1 wrong-way crash, officials said.
Alexandro Carnes, 33, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Nov. 5, but days before was apparently driving 20 to 30 miles per hour on the wrong side of Shoreline Drive when he crashed into another vehicle, city prosecutor Doug Haubert said.
He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and booked into Long Beach jail just before 4 a.m. on Nov. 1, according to jail records. He was released the next day, and three days later, police arrested him on suspicion of murder in connection with the April incident.
Prosecutors also allege this is his third DUI case within 10 years, and added the charges of driving with a suspended license for a prior DUI conviction and resisting arrest, Haubert said. Prosecutors also allege that he refused to complete a chemical test, which is required by California law.
He is expected to be arraigned Monday and if convicted of all DUI-related charges, he could be sentenced to two years in county jail, Haubert said.
In a separate case, Carnes is suspected of murdering his wife Yesenia Carnes, who was found unresponsive in their home in the Wrigley area on April 18. She died the following day and detectives investigated her death as domestic violence. Police said Yesenia Carnes was home with her husband when he assaulted her, and the coroner determined her injuries were a result of the assault.
“Obviously, we will be watching his felony case closely,” Haubert said. “He is suspected of murder, and if he is charged and convicted of murder our case would have less impact. Our case alone, however, is significant because of his prior history and is important to the victim of DUI who will be entitled to restitution.”
Carnes is still being held in jail on a $2 million bail in the murder case.
