Long Beach police say they’ve arrested a man on suspicion of killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend earlier this week.

Dany Hernandez, 38, was taken into custody Tuesday morning on suspicion of murder, according to the LBPD. Police say he arrived unannounced at his former girlfriend’s home in the 3300 block of Andy Street on Monday at around 10:25 a.m. and shot her boyfriend, 28-year-old Ocasis Ku.

“He forced his way into the home, shot the victim, and left the scene by unknown means prior to the officers’ arrival,” the LBPD said in a press release.

Emergency personnel transported Ku to a local hospital where he died.

Police say Hernandez later traveled to a Los Angeles school to pick up his 5-year-old son, with whom he shares custody of with his former girlfriend.

Early Tuesday morning, at around 1 a.m., LBPD’s SWAT team responded to a residence in Los Angeles where Hernandez was discovered to be hiding with the child, police said. After executing a search warrant on the home, Hernandez was arrested and the 5-year-old boy was reunited with his family, police said.

Hernandez was booked on suspicion of murder and his bail was set at $2 million. His brother, 39-year-old Ismael Hernandez, was also arrested about two hours later in Long Beach on suspicion of helping Hernandez evade arrest, according to authorities. He was booked on suspicion of one count of accessory to the crime and his bail was set at $1 million, the LBPD said.

At this time, the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Detectives will present the case against both suspects to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later this week for filing consideration, police said.
