A man was struck and killed today after he got out of a vehicle involved in a collision on the 405 Freeway in Long Beach.

The initial crash involved a black sedan and a white sedan at 12:05 a.m. Monday on the southbound 405 just north of Pacific Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. A witness said it caused a chain reaction.

The man got out of one of the vehicles and was struck by multiple vehicles on the freeway, witnesses told the CHP.

One witness told the CHP the man’s body was on the northbound side. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP initially flared off the southbound HOV lane and lanes 1, 2 and 3. At 1:04 a.m. it issued a SigAlert shutting down all northbound lanes, diverting traffic to the 710 Freeway. The Pacific Avenue on-ramp to the 405 was also shut down.

The southbound lanes were re-opened at 1:16 a.m.
