Police arrested a 36-year-old Long Beach man on suspicion of carjacking after he acted like he had a gun while stealing a car and led officers on a short pursuit in the Poly neighborhood, authorities said.

The woman told officers that shortly before 7:40 p.m. Monday, a man made motions as if he had a gun and stole her car near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Burnett Street, spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy said.

Less than 15 minutes later, officers saw a vehicle matching the description of her vehicle and tried to pull the driver over.

“The driver of the vehicle failed to yield and a short pursuit was initiated that ended with the suspect being taken into custody and the vehicle being recovered,” Dandoy said.

Police identified the man as Leandro Monteiro. He was booked on suspicion of evading a police officer, grand theft auto and vehicle theft in addition to carjacking.

Officers did not find any gun, Dandoy said.
