A man told officers he was shot during an attempted robbery Wednesday night near Downtown Long Beach, police said.

When officers originally got to the scene of the crime in the 100 block of Atlantic Avenue, they found bullet casings but no victim, police said. Shortly after, Long Beach Fire Department medics notified police about a shooting victim located seven miles north near the 700 block of 60th Street, according to police.

Officers spoke to the victim and determined that that two cases were related, police said. The man told officers he was standing near the 100 block of Atlantic Avenue when he was approached by two men who brandished a firearm and attempted to rob him, police said.

While the victim ran, he heard shots, he said, and he later realized he was hit by the gunfire, according to police.

The Long Beach Fire Department transported the victim to a local hospital with a wound that wasn’t life-threatening, police said, and the investigation is ongoing.
