Long Beach police are investigating a shooting that stemmed from a carjacking early this morning near Seventh Street and Cedar Avenue, officials said.

Police were called to the area at about 6 a.m. Sunday and determined the victim, a man, was shot during a struggle with two people while they were stealing his car, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said.

The victim suffered only a minor laceration to his upper body and took himself to a local hospital, she said.

The suspects are only described as a woman and a man, but one suspect is believed to be known to the victim, according to Chavarria.

Police suspect the incident is gang related and are still investigating. The LBPD defines gang-related crimes as any crime committed “for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with any criminal street gang.”
