A man was hospitalized Monday night after being shot in Long Beach’s Washington neighborhood, authorities said.

Police say the shooting took place sometime around 8:29 p.m. in the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue, which is near 14th Street Park.

The man was in the area speaking to a woman that he knew, according to police, when the suspect approached them, pulled out a gun, and shot the man.

Officers responded to the area and found the man suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel treated the man at the scene and then transported him to a local hospital for injuries that were considered life-threatening, authorities said. He is now in stable condition and recovering, police said.

The suspect, who was only described by police as an unknown male, fled the scene on foot before officers arrived. No further information was available.

The crime comes less than a week after another woman was hospitalized following a shooting in the 1400 block of Chesnut Avenue in the Washington neighborhood.

At this time, nothing indicates the two shootings were related, police said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
