Long Beach fire investigators believe at least two of three small blazes were intentionally set in North Long Beach Tuesday night, authorities said.

In the first incident, a trash compactor behind a CVS Pharmacy on Del Amo and Long Beach boulevards caught fire at about 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 24, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jack Crabtree said.

Despite large flames, the blaze did not spread to the building, he said. The incident is still under investigation and the cause of the fire is undetermined, according to Crabtree.

About 30 minutes later, the LBFD responded to reports of another fire, this time a van parked near Market Street and Linden Avenue. Video from the scene shows a minivan engulfed in flames about one mile from the first blaze. Crabtree said investigators consider the blaze to be arson, but the incident is still under investigation.

Firefighters then responded to reports of a dumpster fire near 53rd Street and Atlantic Avenue at about 11:15 p.m. This blaze was less than a quarter mile from the van fire and is also considered to be arson, according to Crabtree.

“We’re looking into if they’re connected as part of the investigation,” he said.

All three fires were quickly extinguished, but firefighters stayed on scene longer at the first one to ensure it did not spread to the structure, Crabtree said.

Police do not yet have any suspects in custody, he said.

In April, a nearby neighborhood in Cal Heights saw a string of alley fires—one of which killed 14 family pets— and some of them were determined to be arson, but investigators were unable to find a suspect.
