A group of three suspects killed a man they’d been fighting with and wounded a bystander in a shooting outside the Packard Building in Central Long Beach Wednesday night according to police.

The man had been in some kind of physical altercation with the suspects moments before one or more of them opened fire on him at about 10:45 p.m. on Anaheim Street between Long Beach Boulevard and Locust Avenue, police said.

The gunfire hit the victim, a 24-year-old from Compton, multiple times in the torso, according to police. Officers found him wounded on the sidewalk where he died, police said. Coroner’s officials identified him as Maurice Ross but said he was from Bellflower, not Compton.

The gunfire also wounded a woman who wasn’t involved in the situation, according to authorities.

She was shot in the lower body but was taken to a hospital where she is expected to survive, according to a statement from the LBPD.

After the shooting, the trio of suspects drove off in an SUV, but it’s unclear at this point if they were in the car when they opened fire, Officer Ben Hearst said.

The spray of gunfire shattered at least one window and pocked a wall at the historic Packard Building at 205 E. Anaheim St. It also left a splatter of blood farther down the street, according to Scott Allen, who was working on the building.

Detectives searched for evidence and any security video that may have captured the shooting, police said. They also spoke with drywall installers who’d been working at the Packard Building late Wednesday night, Allen said.

Police said the suspects are three black men who were in a dark, four-door SUV. Detectives are still working to identify them and any further motive for the shooting.

Police asked anyone with information to contact homicide detectives Oscar Valenzuela, Shea Robertson and Ricardo Solorio at 562-570-7244. Anyone who wants to remain anonymous can send tips to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or lacrimestoppers.org.
