A woman was in critical but stable condition Wednesday night after a motorist hit her in the East Village neighborhood near Downtown and then fled the scene, officials said.

Police and paramedics were called to the crash at Third Street and Atlantic Avenue at about 8:39 p.m., Long Beach Police Department Lt. Robert Bernsen said.

“When officers arrived they found a woman in her mid-20’s unconscious, but breathing and lying in the street,” Bernsen said.

Paramedics treated her at the scene and transported her to a local hospital, he said.

It was unclear how the crash happened, but a security guard at a nearby church said he ran out after hearing a “loud hit” and saw the woman on the ground.

Bernsen said the suspect vehicle was described as dark blue or black four-door Honda and the driver fled the collision before officers got there.

Police taped off the intersection, where a black hat and a single black boot were still on the ground on opposite sides of the street.
