Police said a man was killed while crossing the street in Long Beach’s Zaferia neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

The crash happened shortly before 5:40 a.m. at the intersection of Junipero Avenue and Anaheim Street, according to Long Beach police.

The man was walking southbound on Junipero Avenue and began to cross Anaheim Street in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2010 Toyota Prius heading eastbound in the far left lane, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died. His name and age were not immediately available.

The Toyota driver, a man in his 70s, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police spokesperson Andrea Moran wrote in an email.

Detectives do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash.

Long Beach is struggling to reduce traffic deaths. Tuesday’s crash was the city’s 38th fatal collision of the year — more than double the number of homicides.

This was also the fifth straight fatality involving a pedestrian. Last year, the city recorded 53 fatal crashes, its highest tally in more than a decade.
