A person was shot during an attempted robbery Friday morning at Lincoln Park in Downtown Long Beach, police said, prompting a brief closure of the new skate park.

Police responded around 11:16 a.m. to the park in the 100 block of Pacific Avenue after reports that a shooting had occurred, Long Beach police spokesperson Allison Gallagher said. When officers got to the area, they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body, Gallagher said. He was transported to a local hospital by Long Beach fire personnel with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The victim told police that he was in the park when two male suspects approached him and tried to rob him, which escalated into the shooting. The two suspects were last seen fleeing southbound from the area on foot, LBPD said. No other injuries were reported. Police were not able to confirm the ages of the people involved as it is still early in the investigation, LBPD spokesperson Richard Mejia said.

Gang detectives and officers from the Coordinated Response Team, which focuses on gun violence, also responded to the scene. Police spent over an hour at the skate park interviewing potential witnesses and gathering evidence while many people were still using the rest of the park, including families playing with their children on the nearby playground.
