A suspected carjacker was arrested following an hours-long standoff in West Long Beach Tuesday morning after police found him by tracking the victim’s stolen phone, authorities said.

The situation started around 3:30 a.m. when the carjacker threatened a driver with a handgun and took his or her car near Anaheim Street and Santa Fe Avenue, Long Beach Police Lt. Robert Woods said.

When an officer responded, he used a “find my phone” app installed on the victim’s phone to start tracking it. The GPS signal led them to Summit Avenue near Caspian Street where they spotted the car and a man inside, Woods said.

It’s likely the carjacker didn’t even realize the phone was still in the car, let alone that police were tracking it, Woods said.

After officers spotted him, the suspected carjacker fled into a nearby home and barricaded himself inside, police said.

Officers called in the SWAT team and negotiators along with K-9 units and a drone. They were able to evacuate nearby neighbors and contact the suspect, whom they tried to talk into coming out, Woods said.

Some time before 8:30 a.m., SWAT officers moved in, searched multiple homes and arrested the suspect, Long Beach Police spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy said.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately available. Police were still in the process of booking him into jail late Tuesday morning.
